Warnings on tampon packets?
v PA Wellington / The Health Department is negotiating with tampon makers >to have warnings printed on each brand sold. Most makers have volunteered to put warning’s on tampons both in New Zealand and overseas, but in the United States the Food and Drug Administration wants to make the warnings mandatory. The Director of Clinical Services in the Health Department (Dr J. S. Phillips) said the matter had still not been settled in New Zealand. The subject- of warnings had been .discussed with the makers of brands available in New Zealand, and they had all seemed quite happy to go along with it.
“We are waiting to see what form the American warning will take,’’ he said. According to a report from Washington the proposed label . would say: “Warning. Tampons have been associated with toxic shock syndrome, a rare disease that can be fatal.
“You can almost entirely avoid the risk of getting this disease by not using tampons. You can reduce the risk by using tampons on and off during your period. “If. you have a fever or 102 degrees or more,. and vomit or get.diarrhoea during your period, remove the tampon at once. and see a doctor right away.” - ■
