Help for Maori students

Sir, — Publicity given to proposed changes in the education system to help Maori students, serves only to promote further negative conditioning, leading them to believe they are incapable of great accomplishment. Maori people have long suffered negative conditioning in regard to educational policy and leadership. Teachers must encourage the best from students free from confusing Government policies, Retention and development of cultures and special talents are an inevitable outgrowth. The result would be more satisfied persons, well able to deal with any problems the world might offer, and capable of great accomplishment. Resentment, dissatisfaction, and poor performance must follow the failure to regard Maori students as equally capable of handling the present system. We should acknowledge what must be potentially one of the greatest pools of talent that New Zealand has to offer, stop negative conditioning and Government interference, and encourage growth of natural abilities. — Yours, etc., WAYNE PIVAC.
