' Too little’ biomass study
PA Wellington Far too little research on biomass farming was being done in New Zealand, said the junior opposition whip (Mr S. J. Rodger) in Parliament. “Energy production from biomass can make a vast contribution to the energy scene in this country," he said during the Energy Estimates, but the 'money to research it was simply not being provided.
He aimed his criticism at the Liquid Fuels Trust Board, which has responsibility for investigating energy options and advising the Government of them.
The board spent a “miniscule sum” on biomass research, he said. “Last year it paid more into reserves than it paid Into research.” As a result it was accumulating vast reserves, he said. Only $1.22 million had been spent on research in all fields on energy by the board last year. That equalled nine hours national oil consumption.
