Longbeach
Sir, — May I presume upon your courtesy to use the columns of “The Press” to inquire if any reader can pin-point the origin of an oft-quoted description of John Grigg’s Longbeach as being “the best farm in the world” (or words to that effect). It is believed that this description was applied to Longbeach in a magazine article written by an agricultural expert on a visit to New Zealand almost a century ago. I am in the process of recording the history of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company and as part of my research I have made several attempts to ascertain the name and date of the publication in which this description of Longbeach appeared. I have failed unfortunately to trace the origin of the words or to confirm that these were the exact words used. It would be sad if, like Alfred’s Cakes or Drake’s Bowls, the true origins of the legend were lost. — Yours, etc., W. J. A. BRITTENDEN. October 3, 1980.
