Parks policy

Sir, —The Deerstalkers* Association has selfish motives in wanting to see change in the National Parks Act, Its aim is to protect herds of noxious animals in parks so that its members can kill them. The existing act pays that -natives flora and fauna shall, as fan as possible, be preserved in parks and introduced flora and fauna as far as possible be exterminated. .-Subject to, conditions required to preserve flora and fauna, the public has freedom . of entry and access. Park boards are bound by the' act to pursue a policy, of'destruc-tion-of noxious animals, but they certainly do not prevent anyone from hunting in parks. The extreme selfishness of the deerstalkers is obvious when it is realised that most areas of New Zealand back country, without National Park status, are available to their members. —Yours, etc., COLIN BURROWS. October 1, 1980. '
