Deer sell well
PA Auckland Fresh confidence in t the export market for venison and antler velvet was shown at a bouyant Auckland deer auction on Friday. Firming prices at the first main sal ein the South Head region, ringing Kaipara Harbour, were judged to have stabilised at realistic levels after a boom a year ago. At that time speculators paid $3OOO and more for a
mature hind. The same animal on Friday sold for $1075 to $1250, with younger hinds at $950 to $lOOO and weaners from $350 to $425. The offering of 160 head was dominated by red deer, from the Red Hill property at South Head and from Haldon station in south Canterbury. It included some fallow deer from other local farms.
