Official report, prices

Values were generally firm to dearer on the first day of this week’s two-day wool sale in Christchurch yesterday, according to the official report on the sale issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in coriiunction with the Wool Board and the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association. Compared with the Dunedin sale on September 18, Menno was irregular but in sellers favour; fine Halfbreds were up to 21 per cent: and medium, strong and extra strong Ha breds and Halfbred . skirtings and oddments were in sellers Also compared with the Auckland and Napier combined sale last Friday, fine crossbreds were in sellers’ favour; medium crossbreds firm; strong crossbreds barely steady; crossbred secondshear irregular but generally un. changed; crossbred skirtings and oddments in sellers’ favour; and crossbred crutchings 21 per cent dearer. Competition was keen and well spread for all descriptions. China, supported by Western and Eastern Europe, purchased the main weight of wool. The New Zealand Wool Board gave moderate support to the market, bidding on 4207 bales or 20.5 per cent of the offering and having 823 bales or 4 per cent sold or passed to it. The offering for the first day totalled 20,719 bales. drawn mainly from Canterbury, but also including a reasonable quantity from Marlborough and a few lots from Nelson. The fleece wools were mostly pre-lamb shorn, with a large representation from the Canterbury high country in the finer qualities. These Halfbreds and Corriedales were typical of the selection at this time of the year, being well grown and high yielding, but many were faulted

by vegetable matter which depressed prices. The crossbreds, in the main, were attractive and also high yielding and of good colour and length. This also applied to a good selection of shorn hoggets and second-shear wools in these qualities. The following is the official range of prices issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association: Fine Merino, 64/70s:
