Boxer retains title
PA Invercargill The attempt of the Manawatu boxer, W. Meehan, to wrest the featherweight title from last year’s winner, P. Warren (Tlmaru), proved unsuccessful at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships yesterday. The little South Island southpaw won by a majority decision. Warren moved well throughout the bout and landed some punishing lefts but Meehan won recognition for a gutsy display from the crowd. Southland’s tall and rangy V. Nicholson used his height and some powerful punching to good effect to beat Nelson’s S. Clark in the intermediate bantamweight final. The Southlander showed real courage after suffering a painful blow below the belt in the third, and came back punching strongly. He was a convincing winner.
