Clubhouse opposed

Six objections were heard by a sub-committee of the Waimairi County Council yesterday to proposals by the Harewood Cricket Club and the Nomads United Soccer Club to build a joint clubhouse on land adjacent to Redwood Park.

Representatives of the clubs told the sub-committee that the clubhouse would contain a kitchen, changing rooms, and a social area which would overlook the playing fields. A liquor, licence would not be applied for and functions would finish at a reasonable hour.

There would be no general car-parking in the vicinity of the clubrooms. Parking would be on Sturrocks Road. The county planner, Mr D. D. Hinman, said he was in favour of the proposals but conditions concerning access,

parking, , and landscaping would have to be imposed. The objectors said they were concerned that’ they would be disturbed by noise from the clubhouse and suggested that it be built further away. They were also concerned about the possibility of cars becoming bogged down in the right-of-way which would lead to the proposed clubhouse. Beehives A Redwood man, Mr T. J. Cattermole, sought a specified departure from the subcommittee to repair beehives in his garage. A report by the council’s chief health inspector, Mr G. F. Manton, on noise levels during the repair work, said that “there could be a nuisance situation in certain circumstances.”

Mr Manton suggested that the walls and roof of the garage be lined with particle board and that Mr Cattermole use tungsten-steel saw blades to reduce noise. Mr Cattermole said he had already made some alterations to his garage and that he was prepared to make more to reduce the noise. The sub-committee reserved its decision in both cases until September 29. No kindergarten An application from the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association to build a kindergarten in the Pinehurst Crescent reserve, Avonhead, was withdrawn. The association said that it could not get Education Department approval for the project because residents in the area objected to it.
