Socred member sworn in
PA Wellington Just 30 minutes after he was sworn in as Social Credit member for East Coast Bays yesterday, Mr G. T. Knapp found himself trooping into the voting lobbies of the House of Representatives with the Labour Party.
f Mr Knapp and his leader, Mr B. C. Beetham, who sit beside each other in the House, voted with Labour against the reporting back to Parliament of the Electoral; Amendment Bill from the’ Electoral Law Committee. ■
Mr Knapp, flanked by Mr Beetham as sponsor and the! senior Opposition Whip, Mr! J. L. Hunt, as co-sponsor,:
was sworn in by the Speaker (Sir Richard Harrison) soon after 3 p.m.
Government and Labour members applauded the event, which saw more than one Social Credit member ensconced in Parliament for the first time in New Zealand. The Leader of the House (Mr Thomson) stood to shake Mr Knapp’s hand as the new member, smiling broadly and looking just a trifle overawed, made his way back to his bench at I the rear of the debating chamber.
I Mr Knapp plans to make i his maiden speech in the | House this evening, at 9 ip.m.
