Marlboro will open rich series
NZPA Melbourne The first leg of the Tattersalls $500,000 Triple Crown series gets under way with the running of the rich Marlboro Cup (1400 m at Caulfield tomorrow. The winner of the Marlboro Cup cannot be ablloted from next month’s Caulfield Cup, and cannot be penalised for the win.
However, another major incentive, which has attracted some of Australia’s most versatile gallopers, is the bonus of $500,000 for the horse which wins the Marlboro Cup, the Toorak Handicap and the Caulfield Cup.
i Stewards had to ballot ou • seven horses when 2f accepted yesterday. Included in the final list is last week’s John F. Feehan Stakes winner Arbogast. The Adelaide galloper is certain to perform well again but faces much stronger competition this time from the very promising Torbek, the rogue Turf Ruler and the in-
form Watney. Whichever horse wins tomorrow will probably go on to the Toorak Handicap and that horse would be still peanlty free for the Caulfield Cup if it makes it two wins in a row.
