Shipping News Antarctic research vessel expected
The research and general cargo vessel Benjamin Bownng Is expected to visit Lyttelton during November on her way to deliver stores to the Antarctic, take part in a research programme. She will uplift the Transglobe Expedition now on the far side of the continent and tentativelv scheduled to reach Scott Base in January after a continental traverse. A spokesman for the Antarctic Division of the D.S.I.R. has confirmed that the vessel is scheduled to make her first visit to Lyttelton. He said that the D.S.I.R. would charter the ship for a short period in December to take part in a research project in the Ross Sea area. Built in 1952, the icestrengthened Benjamin Bowring, is only 65m long and 1184 tons gross. Most recently, she has carried cargo between Tokelau, Apia, Suva, Tarawa, and Funafuti—a far cry from the climate she can expect south of the Antarctic Circle. Until 1967 the Benjamin Bowring was known as the Krista Dan when she changed her name to the Martin Karlsen, which name she maintained until last vear.
