Lambs fetch $29.50 in big yarding

Good quality p lillJC were easy to sell at Addington market yesterday. Heavy weight prime lambs had a tremendous sale, the best fetching $29.50 and many other pens selling above $24.50.

Prime cattle were again inconsistent, mainly because too many overdone heifers were in the yarding, but values only eased slightly over all.

Prime sheep, in spite of being offered in very large numbers, sold steadily.

. Prune lambs ; Although faced with another ; large yarding of prime lambs, buyers for the trade supported the market well. Values for most lines remained firm and heavyweight lambs improved another $2. ■ Prices scaled to new heights when lambs from N. F. Pankhurst (Sandy Knolls)! reached $29.50. Prime sheep The prime sheep, market remained vigorous although the yarding totalled 2159 <1025 last week) and selling continued until late in the afternoon. Last week’s high prices for four-tooth wethers.were not repeated but generally both ewes and wethers had a consistent sale.

Prime cattle A strong sale of prime cattle was spoiled by large numbers of over-conditioned heifers, and, to a lesser degree, steers. The best quality steers and hiefers in the yarding of 739 had a good sale and prices for the these remained basically on a par with last week. However, values over all slipped $5 to $lO because of the low prices paid for the over-done cattle.

Competition was reasonably strong but some buyers were particularly selective. T w o Frhsian-Herefo'rd cross steers from D. G. Edge (Oxford) topped the market at $560. A Friesian heifer

.ironi Stewart bros (Marshland) sold for $442 and the best cow price was $394.

Vealers Only the best of. the 86 vealers (35 last week) offered sold at rates comparable with recent sales. Lightweight vealers were hard to quit and some were passed in.

The best of the steers made between $212 and $260, heifers mainly $l9B to $270, and bulls to $260.

Not many bobby calves were offered and these fetched mainly from $25 to $3l with odd sales reaching $47.

Dairy cattle The 13 dairy cows offered (two last week) again had a mixed sale although the demand for better quality animals was quite animated. The top price of $340 was paid for a Friesian. Others, some with calves, ranged between $2OO and $275.

Store sheep Only a small gallery supported the store sheep and lamb markets but values remained surprisingly hi a h. over all the offering of 1388 lambs and 2188 ewes and lambs were easy to sell.

Quality was mixed but a market was found for most types. In the ewes with lambs section, prices ranged from $7.10 to $12.90 but ouality varied accordingly. Border Leicester cross ewes with lambs were keenly sought but the demand for finewoolled ewes was not as strong. Some well grown ewe; hoggets were offered and competition for these was particularly strong. Corriedales went to $25.80 and Border Leicester cross to $22.80. Sales of store sheep included. — R. B. Powell

(Brookside), 37 shorn Corriedale ewes and 55 lambs at $lO.BO (all counted); B. W. Steele (Darfield), 154 Cdrriedale ewe hoggets at $lB.lO to $18.90; N. D. Thomas (Halkett), 100 Border Leicester cross ewe hoggets at $22.80; Hogan and Murray (Amberley), 491 Corriedale ewe hoggets at $22.20 to $25.80.

i Fat pigs Good quality light fat pigs I ihad an excellent sale but were not warded in large, enough numbers to satisfy! the demand. Bacon-weight I pigs had a very steady salej at rates slightly below lastj week and there were enough: of these to fill retail require-1 ments. ' Good choppers again had; an excellent sale, the best; fetching $l3B. Smaller unfin-i ished choppers had a diffi- j cult sale. Values were:— ’ Light pork: $7O to SBO. ; Medium and heavy pork:! J $B2 to $93. j Light and medium baco-j i'ners; $95 to $lOB. . Heavy baconers: to $126. | Light choppers: $4O toj $55. Heavy choppers: $ll5 to $l4O.

Store pigs Buyers were much more : selective in the store pig market and only the very best quality weaners and slips maintained last week’s rates. Poorer quality weaners were almost unwanted and although not many large stores were yarded these were $4 to $5 back on last week.

The only breeding stock offered was a maiden sow with a litter of 11, which sold for $250. Values were:— Small weaners: $lB to $25. Good weaners: $2B to $35. Slips and small stores: $36 to $45. Large stores: to $55.
