Labour policy on local government
Sir,—The Labour Party policy on local government announced by Mr Rowling would do much to assist Christchurch residents faced with an ever-increasing rates burden. Interest rates for local government would be held at the level for Government Stock. Under a Labour Government rates-re-bate income limits would be reviewed annually to keep them level with' the basic married rate for National Superannuation. Taxation of the unearned wealth that may accrue from zoning charges would be made available to local authorities. Clearly, the Labour Party has accepted the principle of revenue sharing between central and local government.—Yours etc., Cr D. J. ROWLANDS. September 19, 1980.
