Town Hall sound system
Sir, — Last evening (Monday) we attended Victor Borge’s concert in the Town Hall Auditorium. It was a wonderful evening and, as far as I am concerned, well worth, the money spent. However, there are many who, because of the appallingly engineered public address system, did not hear very much at all. I. thought that a large amount of money, around $lOO,OOO had just been spent improving the system. If this is the case, the situation last evening should not have been able to happen, let alone have happened. Do those who only heard . a little of last night’s “chat” get a part refund? I think they should. — Yours, etc., J. C. DODGSHUN. September 23, 1980. [The manager of the Town Hall (Mr B. P. Connell) commented that he had received four complaints involving about 10 patrons who had not been able. to hear the Victor Borge concert bn Monday evening. It was a mystery why a group of about 10 patrons seated in one block had been unable to hear clearly. A team was 'investigating the sound ; system to see if the problem could be solved. Mr Connell said that part of the Town Hall’s new sound system,
which cost $120,000, had been used in the Victor Borge concert. Components worth about $20,000 from the Town Hall’s system had been used, but the performer used his Own microphone. He said that the Town Hall’s new sound system was designed especially for the auditorium and overcame problems experienced in the past. Problems still arose when performers made particular demands. The Town Hall would not give refunds to any patrons who had not heard clearly.]
