Bellringers and Truxtun protest

Sir, — This lunch hour a group of concerned people were promoting the Christian message of peace and love, and asking that we people of Christchurch should resist the visit of the United States nuclear-armed ship, Truxtun, to our country. In the middle of this exercise, the Cathedral bellringers began a three-quar-ter hour peal which made it impossible for the singers; actors and speakers to be heard. I asked, the authorities if- the peal could be halted; they explained that the bellringers could only perform then and that they were ringing the peal in memory of the late Martin Sullivan; and that they needed no permission from the council to ring the Cathedral bells at any reasonable time. Surely Martin Sullivan would prefer Christ’s message of love and peace to be heard rather than that he, a follower of Christ, should be honoured. — Yours, etc., SUSAN TAYLOR. September 22, 1980.
