In July the ■ chairman ol the sendee’s management committee (Mr ■ " M.. > F Rogers) warned that/.-funds were running so low that the service might be forced to close. ‘Last month the committee was advised by the Directoi of Social Welfare in Christ church (Mr C. n The service’s statement of [j accounts, for the year ended . June 30 shows a total of a $5102 from grants,, against e $9322. the previous financial >- year. The main item of ex- : penditure was $7486 for the if salary of the service’s fullit time secretary-organiser,- Mr r . J. F. Maguire. s The service is still looking it for a more stable form of. i income and has been trying to involve the Canterbury e Retailers’ Association in a ,r scheme whereby a pert- centage of repaid debts o would ■be returned to the ■- service. Mr Rogers said that e the association had been !- “sympathetic” but so far s nothing definite had come of i- the talks. r- The service interviewed >e. 397 people with a total indebtedness of $349,343, of ;- whom 192 accepted the help ie of the service and repaid $219,490.
