Floodgates on city rivers—Labour
J The Labour Party’s. Drainage?.' Board policy . for the Christchurch local body elections was released at a meeting in Sydenham last evening. '. -.'' Mr J. F. Davidson, a Labour candidate for the board, said Labour would support the installation of floodgates and pumping station’s at the mouths of the Ayon and Heathcote Rivers, y. A full inquiry into?-the Avon, Heathcote, and Styx catchments would be advocated to solve flooding, and the Government would be
pressed for more subsidy money' for flood relief programmes, he said.. , . . /Labour would oppose further development on the Port Hills until the Heathcote River could cope with the additional storm water and run-off and the erosion of the hills could be controlled. A study of the use of sewage to produce energy would be instigated, and Labour would support the absorption of Drainage Board functions into any proposed, elected regional authority, Mr Davidson added.
