Transport body against deregulation
The Road Transport Association is opposed to any form of deregulation that would cause “open slather” in the industry. It fears that the proposed change to the licensing system might increase the number of “fly-by-night operators and shoestring firms” which could undercut the rates of established Road Transport Association members. However, the association said that it recognised that some changes might be necessary. If changes were made, it would prefer a system of “quality licensing,” where an operator intending to start in business would have to prove his ability to run the company properly.
