Challenge to statistics
PA Wellington The New Zealand Fishing Industry Board has challenged Statistics Department figures used in a recent Lincoln College survey which said that there had been a substantial drop in fish; consumption in New Zealand.. The board says that the figures used in the survey were based on Statistics Department figures that • were “quite incorrect.” An analysis of fish production by the board indicates that during the last decade there has been a steady increase in per capita consumption of fish in New Zealand — from 9kg of fin fish per person in 1970-75 to about 12kg per person in 1979, the board says.
Estimating per capita fish consumption is full of hazards and not simply a matter of deducting export weight from the landed weight, the board says. In all other respects the survey provided some useful information, the board says, which will be valuable for planning its future promotion programme.
