Journalists see duty to cover rugby tour
PA Wellington Journalists have a responsibility to provide “full, balanced, and accurate coverage of all aspects of the proposed 1981 Springbok tour,” the New Zealand Journalists’ Union has resolved.
The resolution, passed unanimously at the annual conference of the union, which represents newspaper journalists south of the Auckland province, said that this cover should include the activities of groups formed to support or oppose the tour.
It “strongly condemns” any attempt by any group or person to prevent journalists from discharging that responsibility.
The conference also resolved that "in the light of events at Eden Park” the N.Z.J.U. write to the New Zealand Rugby Union to seek an assurance that rugby officials would be instructed to refrain from impeding journalists covering a tour of any associated activities or demonstrations.
