Nighborn proves fitness
[Greyhounds
One of Canterbury's most travelled and consistent greyhounds, Nigiioom, snowed that he will be a force to reckon with in classic races at Queen Elizabeth 11 Park this season with an effortless win in the main race at the sweepstake meeting on Saturday.
Nignborn, sometimes a slow beginner last season, was out qmealy from box live, in the ciasses four and five event and wrested the lead from his litter brother Go Benjamin before the first turn.
Although Go Benjamin chased hard to the finish, Nighborn was always in control and won by four lengths from Go Benjamin, with a snort gap to Little Devil, which outfinished Signor Caruso and Solarcaine. Nignoorn recorded the good time of 34.38 s for the 560 m.
Roundabout Star produced a fine run to win the class-three race over 560 m. The big dog was three wide racing to the home turn, where he suffered a cheek. He recovered quickly and found racing room along the rail and, in a desperate finish, he got up to win by a neck from the gallant pacemaker, Kotuku Wadderln, with Smuggler’s Lass a neck back in third place. A sterling finish by Flying Cris gave her a win in the distance race and the main sprint was won nicely by Cracker Starlet. Results:—
