Warning on tax

Whitebaiters who sold their catch were liable to pay 25 per cent of the proceeds in tax, said the regional controller of the Inland Revenue Department in Christchurch, Mr T. H. Silcock, yesterday. Dealers in eels and game were subject to the same tax.

“It is common knowledge that travelling salesmen, agents and employees of all descriptions, including Government and bank employees, sometimes sell or buy large quantities of whitebait for their own consumption or for sale,” said Mr Silcock. “The income they earn from this source is taxable.” As well, the purchases dealers made were not exempt from the requirement to deduct 25c in the dollar.
