Shipping News World Maritime Day observance

Wednesday, September 24, has been announced by the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport as World Maritime Day, with this year’s theme being “maritime training for safer shipping and cleaner oceans.”

The day commemorates the founding of the Inter-Govern-mental Maritime Consultive Organisation (1.M.C.0.) which now has more than 100 members from Africa. America, Asia. Australasia, and Europe. Tlie i.M.C.O. has been active in. many maritime matters. It has raised safety standards among member nations by establishing rules for navigation procedures, life-saving, search and rescue, ship design, fire protection and the - carriage of dangerous goods. The organisation also aims to reduce and simplify government documentation relating to the visits of ships to ports throughout the world, , It is also greatly concerned with the protection of the marine environment and in 1973 established the Convention for the Prevention of Pollution by Ships. 1.M.C.0. also provides advisory and technical assistance in many spheres of maritime safety, administration, training arid other related areas.

The first phase of the organisation’s legal work came about following the sinking of the Torrey Canyon off the coast of England in 1967, polluting widespread coastal areas. Since then it has been active in Investigating oil and chemical spills and in developing international conventions to prevent pollution.
