Forestry potential outlined

The wood-production potential from forestry in the 19905. with the emphasis on increased marketing for export, is the subject of a new booklet distributed by the New Zealand Forest Service. The booklet, “The Forestry Sector in New Zealand” investigates forest-based industries and exports over the next 25 years. It was not a definitive statement ,of Forest Service policy, said the Director of Forest Planning (Mr D. A. Elliott). It was a stimulant for discussion of alternative uses and development choices for increased timber production, he said. Predictions based on past and present planting rates showed that the exotic timber supply would increase dramatically from 1990. By the turn of the century , overseas earnings from the forestry sector could be as high as $lOOO million a year.Mr Elliott said the booklet examined possible ways to use this increase. It considered how regional development would be affected by forestry, market prospects for timber products, and export possibilities.
