Medical school cuts?
PA Wellington The Minister of Health (Mr Gair) has hinted strongly that medicalschool intakes might soon be cut by 12.5 per cent. It now appeared that the future surplus of doctors might be bigger than had been initially envisaged and that made a decision about medical-school intakes even more important and urgent, he said in an address to the council of the Medical Association. But he could not take the matter of cuts further until the situation on doctor distribution was clearer. Mr Gair gave his tentative support to an emergency service which would see doctors relieving in communities suffering a lack of medical services.
