Wellington Pipe Band impresses
NZPA London New Zealand’s leading pipe band, the City of Wellington, is continuing to impress during its stay in Scotland.
The band finished third in a Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association contest in Edinburgh, beating the highly-rated band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards into fourth place. ’ Competing for a maximum of 100 points, a spread of only 2| points covered the top four. First and second were two local .bands, Polkemmet Colliery and Boghall and Bathgate. The contest took the form of a five-minute test selection which had to include a march, strathspey, and reel.
The Wellington band is competing in contests in between performing in the nightly military tatoo at Edinburgh Castle. Two of its pipers', the father and son, John and Alastair -Hanning, also had success 'in a solo competition in. Oban. Mr Hanning, sen., finished fourth in the open pibroch section and Alastair was second in the solo march.
