Subsidy ‘bribery’

An announcement by the Minister, of Health (Mr Gair) that installation of fluoridation plants would receive a 50 per cent subsidy by the Government has been described as “another bribe” by Mr C. G. Marshall of Christchurch. Mr Marshall, a spokesman for the Canterbury branch of the Pure Water Association, said that local bodies would recognise that fact. The association would soon make, a statement that

would remove '“the'pressure from local authorities and the bureaucracy, and let the? people make up their own minds about the fluoridation of water supplies,” Mr Marshall said. The Dental Association was enthusiastic about pressing the Government to make the treatment compulsory, he said. Such unprecedented erosion of citizens’ rights was a danger to the democratic process in New Zealand.
