Commission starts work
PA Wellington The Commission of Inquiry - into., the Marginal Lands Board loan affair, will hold its first public sitting today-in Commerce House, Wellington. On September 9, the commission will start hearing evidence and submissions. It will sit regularly after that until the inquiry is Complete. It is believed that about five weeks' have <. been set aside for the hearing of submissions. The
commission’s reporting date is November 14. The commission, chaired by Mr B. D., Inglis, Q.C., will meet today to outline its terms of reference, the procedures it ? will follow,, aiid'to determine'which in- • terested parties will appear at the formal hearings. , ? The Marginal Lands Board loan affair blew tip in June when a long-time member, Mr -Rqly. White, , of Whakatane, resigned, alleging that the board’s
chairman and .Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young) had put pressure on the board to grant a loan.to a Wellington couple, Mr and Mrs J. M. Fitzgerald. The ; Wellington . CJ.B. ' confirmed “ yesterday ' that inquiries were continuing into a complaint laid by the board’s deputy chairman, Mr Noel Coad, about the Fitzgeralds* original . application. The ; complaint related to a statutory declaration.
