100 hurt in anti-Strauss protest
NZPA .Hamburg More than 100 police and at least, four demonstrators were injured, and six fire brigade trucks, 27 police vehicles, and an unknown number of private cars damaged during a tumultuous demonstration against an election rally yesterday by the conservative West German politician, Franz-Josef Strauss.
The police said that 12 demonstrators were detained. One of them allegedly carried a loaded pistol. Most of the injuries were slight, the police said. Two men were taken to hospital for treatment. The riots started when 15,000 anti-Strauss demonstrators marched on the hall where the controversial election opponent of Chancellor Helmut Schmidt addressed a crowd of about 5000 people. The . police, who were 3500-strong to protect Mr Strauss, said they used-tear-gas to fight a hail of stones and burning wood and plastic buckets, but prevented the rioters from breaking through their lines. The General Election is scheduled for October 5.
