NZPA .Hamburg More than 100 police and at least, four demonstrators were injured, and six fire brigade trucks, 27 police vehicles, and an unknown number of private cars damaged during a tumultuous demonstration against an election rally yesterday by the conservative West German politician, Franz-Josef Strauss.

The police said that 12 demonstrators were detained. One of them allegedly carried a loaded pistol. Most of the injuries were slight, the police said. Two men were taken to hospital for treatment. The riots started when 15,000 anti-Strauss demonstrators marched on the hall where the controversial election opponent of Chancellor Helmut Schmidt addressed a crowd of about 5000 people. The . police, who were 3500-strong to protect Mr Strauss, said they used-tear-gas to fight a hail of stones and burning wood and plastic buckets, but prevented the rioters from breaking through their lines. The General Election is scheduled for October 5.
