Deb’s Mate chosen for Pukekohe
Special correspondent Dunedin Powley attracted further attention with a smart gallop at Wingatui yesterday morning. Powley led Masterlea by threequarters of a length aL the finish of 1000 m on a heavy sand, she returned Imin 3.95, the last 800rh in 51.3 s and 600 m in 38.55. Powley, a three-year-old Noble Bijou — Mellay Vite filiy in the stable of Hector Anderton, sen, did well to finish ninth in her first start at Oamaru last week after being left at the start. Murray Jones is to ride the Grand National Hurdles winner, Bymai, in the flat race for amateur riders at Gore.
Charlie Brough has been engaged for the English sprinter, Schweppshire Lad at Ashburton on Tuesday. Schweppshire Lad, trained by Jim Lalor at Ashburton, won six of his seven starts as a two-year-old in Britain in 1978 and he was rated second to Tromos on the Free Handicap. The Decoy Boy—Archaic colt was unplaced in three starts as a three-year-old before he was bought at auction by Mr Don Peddie, of Timaru. All his wins were over 1000 m.
Ef Cee, the winner of three races last season, died on Monday from an internal complaint thought to have been caused when he was injured in training about a fortnight ago. A six-year-old by Gate Keeper from Tarcass, Ef Cee won highweights at Beaumont and Wyndham and was successful over hurdles at Gore last season when trained by Des Hunt. RACE 5 T.A.B.
