‘Penthouse’ magazine
. Sir, — It is fairly obvious that Mr D, Jones, M.P., and Mr .Neville Rush (August 20) have no concern for democracy and human rights. Mr Jones represents a Government with “freedom’’ in its manifesto, yet with his comments on lesbians and gays generally, he is refusing to support the rights of about 10 per cent of his electorate. The only obscenity in the country at the moment, is over 60,000 unemployed and
the. rape of our natural resources by the multinationals with the connivance of the present Government which is delaying ratification of the international covenants of economic, social and cultural, civil and political, rights.—-Yours, etc., J. H. WILSON. August 20, 1980.
Sir, — In reply to H. Williams (August 22), I believe at no stage has Neville Rush (August 20) insinuated that the correspondent is some kind of alcoholic sex criminal. However, what Mr Rush did say was that we should realise the damaging effects such pornographic material as “Penthouse”, etc., can have. Mr Rush in his letter said, quite openly that we have -had enough rapes and attacks and it is about time we did something about it. Some “Penthouse” editions have been classed as indecent in the past. I would also like to inform Mr Williams that “Penthouse” is not devoted to heterosexual pursuits alone which qualifies the statement that such material is perverted as Mr Rush quite rightly points out. — Yours,, etc., GAVIN COWLEY. JAMES McSHANE August 22, 1980.
