New timber handling boost to exports?
New timber handling techniques used at Lyttelton have produced cost savings which have encouraged shipping companies to expand the export of processed and sawn timbers. The “multi pack” method allows the easy handling of banded bundles of timber of the same length by fork lift trucks. While there is some added expense to the shipper in having the packs banded, the advantages seem to outweigh the extra cost. Earlier this month multi pack timber was loaded aboard the Jebsen Line vessel Athlon for shipment to Japan at a rate of 47 tonnes an hour. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s commercial manager, Mr J. B. Graham, said the fast rate of loading had led the company to plan to use the service more in the future, hopefully leading to increased exports of processed and sawn timbers. • Another shipping company had also shown interest in carrying multi pack timber from Lyttelton regularly'.
