Sovereignty
Sir, — There are many ways in which a country may lose or surrender its sovereignty. Dubcek’s Government gave w r ay to the accompaniment of the jackboot tread and the rumble of tanks belonging to Big Brother Ivan who knew what was best for Czechoslovakia. Naturally, the likes of Comrade Andersen will don their Soviet-style, cynical smiles and dismiss the television film,' “Invasion,” as the product of warmongering capitalism. Britain, where the documentary was prepared, surrendered her sovereignty when, perforce, she had to join the E.E.C. New Zealand? — to the highest bidder, at good rates of interest — providing we make available cheap electricity, cheap coal and chunks of land to our creditors. And by so “restructuring” our industries that our exporting creditors may get a better grip on our markets. But, what the hell — so long as we get our smokes, our grog, a few bucks on. the T.A.8., and, of . course, a colour telly; she’ll be-: right, mate!—Yours, etc., L. A. H. BOGREN. i August 20, 1980. i
