Manawatu swamps North Auckland with four tries
PA Palmerston North Manatvatu produced an outstanding forward effort to swamp North Auckland, 25-13, in a national championship Rugby match at Palmerstbn North on Saturday.
Manawatu led 15-6 at h.-.lf-time and had little trouble in adding another two championship points to make its total 12 from seven matches — two ahead of Wellington, which is, however, unbeaten. The star of the match was the Manawatu first fiveeighth, Doug Rollerson, who scored two tries and kicked three conversions and a penalty to score 17 of Manawatu’s points.
Outstanding in Manawatu’s forward effort were All Blacks Mark Shaw and Gary Knight, with fine support from the locks, Murray Rosenbrook and Frank Oliver, and the hooker, Bruce Hemara.
The best of the visiting side were the flanker, Tuck 'Waaka, and the centre, i Chippie Semenoff. Manawatu: Tries, D. Rollerson (2), G. Old, L. Cameron; three conversions and a penalty, Rollerson. North Auckland: Tries, C. Semenoff, F. Woodman; conversion and penalty, D. Haynes. In a national reserve grade curtain-raiser, Manawatu B beat Wellington B, 15-11.
