South Africa and sport
Sir, — New Zealand-domi-ciled South Africa baiters, in most cases appear to be folk who have never visited the republic. How can one speak or write about a country if one has not visited it? In reply to A. J. Campbell (August 12) Byran Wilson’s book, “Merit Selection in South Africa Sport 1980,” covers interviews with all sports groups, including the one that A. J. Campbell is concerned about. Some people want to close down the South African Consulate here and even ban trade with South Africa to whose door major trading nations are beating a path. South Africa is booming and wealthy. Vast, and admittedly necessary changes are going on there. I have no axe to grind but suggest to A. J. Campbell and his kind — Go and look at South Africa first, and then we can amicably debate from there. — Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. August 12, 1980.
