Mr Rowling’s trip

Sir, — Your editorial (August 9) is both succinct and subjective yet one is left musing what may be the real reason for Mr . Rowling not travelling. After a week when two key Labour persons resigned, yet another Labour member of Parliament published his version of what Labour policy should, could or may be, and the F.O.L. was much in the public eye, no leader with waning popularity could feel he could afford to leave the fort unguarded. How much is it mere politicking to suggest the Prime Minister stood in his way? Could Mr Rowling not have made a private trip or travelled at the expense of his party, if he so wished? — Yours, etc., WILLIAM RICHARDSON. August 10, 1980. .
