Child-access problem
PA Wellington The courts’ handling of cases for access to children by non-custodial parents leaves much to bs desired, the Equal Parental Rights Society has told the Minister of Justic® (Mr McLay). The society’s acting chairman (Mr G. Boxalli cited six cases in which he said contact by the non-custodial parent had been wilfully denied in spite of repeated applications to the court for assistance. Last year the society
presented eight such cases to Mr McLay, who, it said, had conceded that the only proper course was to appeal. Mr Boxall said that appointments to the counselling services of the Family Court and the assistance of access officers to resolve access disputes more effectively were urgently needed, Only a radical reorientation of court attitudes and statutory recognition of the need to appoint specialist counsellors would relieve the unhappy situation.
