Massetti Cup ends in tie
By JOHN COFFEY The representatives of Canterbury 7 rugby 7 league’s eastern and western extremities will meet when the premier trophies are presented at season’s end. Eastern Suburbs and MaristWestern Suburbs are to share the Massetti Cup as joint winners of the N.Z.I.G. premiership. Eastern was always comfortably clear of Hornby during the final round at the Show Grounds yesterday, and Marist resisted the considerable pressure exerted by Addington to ensure that its name would be inscribed on the cup for the first time since 1972 The 16-6 win to Marist enabled Sydenham to stay ahead of Addington in the tussle for the vital fourth championship semi-final position.
Next Sunday Eastern and Marist will continue a rivalry that produced two draws in the premiership, the winner earning a clear passage to the grand final on August 30. The minor semifinal. played on a suddendeath basis, is to be between Papanui and Sydenham.
Once it became obvious that Hornby had no chance of upsetting Eastern and that Papanui would decisively account for Kaiapoi, most attention switched to Marist’s encounter with Addington. Results. . Marist-Western 16, Addington 6. ’
