Levy will help milk producers

PA Wellington Town Milk Producers throughout New Zealand will levy themselves 0.02 cent a litre to provide a fund of $lOO,OOO to help their fellows on the Taieri Plain who have suffered from the recent flood. The decision was made by; the organisation’s annual conference.

The conference had a full discussion of the circumstances surrounding the disaster. The president (Mr D. C. Lane) told, the conference the future for the area and the farmers there was bleak. He said discussions had taken place with, the Government about getting

grants or suspensory loans for farmers worst affected. “We have recently been informed that there has been a substantial increase from $l2OO to . $7OOO in the amount of interest on relief loans from the Rural Bank which can be converted to a suspensory loan and written off after five years,” Mr Lane said. “There is no argument that this will make a significant contribution to the rehabilitation of farmers affected by the floods, but to be implemented it must involve them in further over-all indebtedness. “We do not see this as a real solution to the huge problems these farmers have,” said Mr Lane.
