Council staff bar?
Christchurch City Council officers will have a bar in the new civic offices -in Tuam Street. if licensing approval is given.. The Christchurch Municipal Officers’ Association has applied to . the Licensing Control Commission’Tor : an ancillary licence to open a ' bar on Wednesdays from 4p.m. to 7 p.m. arid on Fridays from 4 p.m. to'9 p.m; ; 1 . ' The association's treasurer, Mr D. O’Grady, said the officers' had been . allocated space on. the 'top floor of the former Miller’s build-
ing, near the staff cafeteria. ’ The council will begin occupying . the five-storey building, .Which has been extensively renovated, . from August 18. It is expected to take up . to five weeks to complete the shift from the present premises in Manchester Street. Mr O’Grady said the association hoped to be able to have the bar opened by November. It would cater for salaried and clerical staff of the council who were association members. He said he expected membership to reach 350 in the
near future. About $lO,OOO of the association’s funds would be spent on furniture and' fittings for the bar. "We have saved up for a number of years for this eventuality,” • said Mr O’Grady. The association had used a room at the rear of' the Manchester Street offices for social functions but this was not licensed; The new bar would be used after regular sports meetings already held between the association and other groups. It could also be used by the council for receptions.
