Mururoa request in doubt
PA : Welingtbh A request by the Government to . inspect the French nuclear testing facilities at Mururoa is still being considered, according to the French Ambassador (Mr J. Gueury). The French Government is believed to be. almost certain to reject the' request on the ground of State secrecy, believing that, even its closest allies should not be allowed to see such a sensitive defence site. Mr Gueury, when asked about the request, said that no decision had yet been taken. He also said that New Zealand was beginning to realise ■ that “our explosions are harmless.” Bastille Day, July 14, was meant to be a day of protest against the test, but the population was very quiet. Our opponents have difficulty proving that > the experiments are harmful.” Mr Gueury said he had received only seven protest letters on Day.
