Smelter extension
Sir, — So the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter is to be enlarged at a cost of . $2OO million to give 350 people a work place. Since Australia, using its own bauxite, is on an all-out effort to expand its output, we could face another aluminium glut. People who tried to repair an iron roof with corrugated aluminium know to their cost it is highly reactive and of limited use for that reason. The garlic farm we saw recently on TV may raise a patronising smile; but the owner has the right idea. Work places can be created cheaply and be spread throughout the country. Our workers are unfairly compared with foreigners with markets at their door, our rural communities are losing their youth and becoming so run down, the people in them are becoming restive for good reasons.. Neither the Government nor some of your correspondents seem to be aware that this is happening. — Yours, etc., A. M. COATES. August 1, 1980.
