Empty hostel rooms

Sir, — I am glad to see that the North Canterbury Hospital Board is considering using some of the empty rooms at the nurses’ hostel to accommodate relatives of patients; why do they not go one step further and provide 24-hour care for children of patients, particularly day care for older children during school holidays. The knowledge that their children are, properly cared ; for could surely ease some of the stress and aid recovery. Children of maternity patients at Christchurch Women’s could also be accommodated, thus relieving the pressure on .women to return home too early after giving birth. While the present administration may find it desirable to discharge patients as soon as possible, the mental wellbeing of patients should be considered as well as their physical '■ well-being. — Yours, etc., . JUDY H. WATERS. July 22, 1980.
