P.N.G. to send troops
NZPA Port Moresby Papua New Guineawill send up to- 300 troops to “keep order” in the New Hebrides after independence, and a special sitting of the national Parliament has been ■called to give parliamentary I approval for the move, the [ Papua New. ‘ Guinea Prime Minister (Sir Julius Chan) • has said. Sir Julius said that a Cabinet meeiing had decided to; recall Parliament for a special sitting in August “ to consider the urgent request from the Government of the New Hebrides to use Papua New Guinea defence force personnel to keep order in : the New Hebrides.” Sir Julius added: “I expect ! that any action our troops may have to take would be; over a short time only. More i than a short-term committment should not be necessary.” , He said the decision to[ send troops was unaffected! “at this stage” by the occu-! pation of the rebel-held New Hebridean island of Espiritu Sarito by British and French troops. He said that a force ofi. 150 Papua New Guinea: troops including a 50-man' pipe band would fly to the New Hebrides for the inde-) pendente celebrations on : Wednesday.
