PA ;Auckland A 'man, aged 27, described by his counsel as “community. <: - conscious,” and who had worked for several years with ■ the Scout movement, hais been sentenced to six. ■'months imprisonment. lan Charles ' Phipps, a clerk, pleaded guilty to two charges of doing indecent acts on boys under the age of 16. He appeared in the High Court for sentence. “It-. is the inherent tragedy on. so many of these occasions that the man who stands in the dock is a man who in so many ways has so much to offer the community. You are in exactly this
category,” Mr Justice Thorp told him. However, the Court had \ to express its disapproval of this type of conduct, especially as Phipps had responsibility for the boys concerned, said His Honour. Although it w’as only a secondary responsibility he was still a scoutmaster in charge of a .group of scouts. His Honour said Phipps would need guid- . ance after being released from prison, and ordered him to undergo 12 months probation on his release. Mr S. G. Lockhart appeared for Phipps and Mr D. J. McDonald for the Crown.
