Gasworks discussed

Christchurch cannot afford the redundancies that may be caused by the closing.of the gasworks, the Christchurch City Council, was told last evening. Cr M. R. Carter told the council that 'some small industries might have to close because of the loss of the gasworks. The problems faced by industrial gas consumers had not been raised since the Gas Company announced its intention to close in March, 1982. Christchurch local authorities will meet today to dis-

cuss, the effects of the gasworks’ closing, the Mayor (Mr Hamish Hay) said. The meeting would also discuss the problems of compensation for elderly domestic consumers, whose appliances qualified for little compensation. Cr Nola Massey said many consumers were getting a different response from the Gas Company than the generous one suggested in newspaper reports. They had found they did not qualify for the amount of assistance they had believed they were entitled to, she said.
