Not much to close

PA Hamilton A few local eyebrows were raised with the official closing of Matatoki railway station near Thames on Saturday. For, to all public appearances, it has not existed for years; the building is gone and no traffic uses it. Yet the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan) closed the station on Saturday after advertising for planning objections and receiving none.

The department’s regional traffic manager (Mr S. Irving) said Matatoki had existed as a station even though it might not have looked like a station. “There are no buildings but there was a siding with quite valuable plant,” he said.
