Franz Josef access
Greymouth reporter Rock for repair work to the Franz Josef Glacier access road, a project now “well in hand,” will be obtained from the Westland National Park, said the board’s chairman (Mr C. S. Christie), yesterday. At a meeting of the National Roads Board earlier this year, expenditure of $60,000 to restore road access to the upper car-park was agreed upon, and work has been started by the Ministry of Works and Development. Mr Christie said that the job was dependent on the availability of trucks and heavy machinery, but he expected the road to. be finished before the summer season. He expressed pleasure at the support given by the Roads Board, “which is as conscious as we are of the need to keep the access road open.”
