Running the races
Ski-field personnel will be used liberally to help run the races at all three venues for the 1980 Europa F.I.S. series.
The professional expertise available for the Mount Hutt events, for instance. will include that of the Austrian, Christian Witt-Doring (chief of course), the field’s head ski patroller, Bruce Garrick (chief of medical and rescue services), and Kevin Dent (course steward). Mr John Vryenhoek, the chairman of the organising committee for the series, will act as chief of race with Dougal Harcourt his assistant.
For the Coronet Peak events the chief of race will be the American. Bruce Bowlin, with Andreas Hefti, the Swiss jointly employed by the New Zealand Ski Association and Turoa-A.H.L, being the assistant chief of race at Turoa. Mr Tony Wright, manager of the Turoa field, is chairman of the race committee for the events there.
The . members of the over-all organising committee for the series included Messrs... Vryenhoek and Hefti, Jan Stewart, . Neil Harrison (who organised the first three series at Mount Hutt),-Richard Johnson (N.Z.S.A.) and Kelley Griffiths. (Europa). The. Mount HuttY programme is:—
July 28 to 29, downhill training; July 30, first downhill, 11 a.m. and 1.30 p.m,; July 31, second downhill, 11 a.m. and 1.30 p.m.; August 5, women’s slalom, 10.30 a.m. and 12 midday; August 6, men’s slalom, 10.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.; August 7, giant slalom, 10 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. (women), 10.45 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. (men).
The Coronet Peak events begin with the men’s and women’s G.S. on August 1. Turoa starts with downhill training on August 5.
